Preemptive power blackouts may be in our future after utility regulators approved guidelines that allow utilities to shut off electricity during extreme fire danger.

In addition to focusing on “de-energizing” the power grid to prevent electrical equipment from sparking wildfires, the California Public Utilities Commission on Thursday approved wildfire mitigation plans for the state’s big utilities.

Personally, I’d be happy to put up with more power blackouts if it would help prevent the devastating fires we’ve seen over the past few years.
