Imperial Beach's Entire Shoreline Closes Due to Sewage Flow

The entire shoreline of the city of Imperial Beach near Tijuana is closed to swimming, because more than a 110 million gallons of toxic storm water have swept over the border from Mexico during the past two months.

Stan Lee's Caregiver Faces Elder Abuse Charges

A former manager and caretaker for the man credited with co-creating of dozens of iconic superheroes will be in court today. Keya Morgan is charged with elder abuse of Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee. Morgan was arrested in Arizona over the weekend and faces extradition to California.

State Bill Deadline Looms This Week

Several high profile bills in the California Legislature face a major deadline this week. Any legislation that hopes to pass this year has to get out of its house of origin by Friday.

Fire Weather Stations Could Get Expanded Under State Bill

Napa State Senator Bill Dodd's legislation to create a state wildfire warning center cleared the senate this past week. It would inform officials about fires using data from a massive network of new weather stations. They're supposed to help PG&E predict when forest fires could happen, but with only around 350 of them right now, there aren't enough to get the kind of information fire fighters need, especially with California's many microclimates.

Advocates across the United States are decrying a proposed policy from the Trump Administration that would make it easier for homeless shelters to discriminate against trans individuals. Meanwhile, San Francisco is leading the nation by opening the only transitional housing shelter program specifically designed for trans youth.

Big City Mayors Question How to Move Forward After SB 50 is Shelved

Of all the bills shelved this month in Sacramento, none generated more controversy than SB 50. The measure would have forced much of California to accommodate a lot more housing construction by reducing local zoning control. Now that appears to be off the table till next year.
