A battle over sex ed is roiling Fremont over how the Fremont Unified School District should or should not teach students about sex and sexuality.

Tempers are high as some parents think teaching sex education beginning in fourth grade is inappropriate, while others think it is essential.

The school board is attempting to update its sex ed curriculum to be in compliance with the California Healthy Youth Act, one of the most progressive set of sex ed requirements in the country.

Parents can opt their kids out of the sex education course.
