Gov. Jerry Brown agreed to deploy 400 California National Guard troops, saying they will not "round up women and children or detain people escaping violence or seeking a better life."
In a letter sent to the Trump administration, Brown went out of his way to distance the Guard deployment from the president's overall immigration policies.
Gov. Brown, a former Jesuit seminarian, even quoted Catholic Bishops' recommendation that National Guard border deployment "is measured and not disruptive to community life."
