San Francisco police are investigating the theft of a shotgun, rifle, ammunition, bulletproof vest and FBI jacket stolen last week from the car of a San Mateo County sheriff's sergeant.

The East Bay Times reports Monday the sergeant was attending an FBI task force meeting in San Francisco when his car window was broken and the weapons stolen.

San Mateo County Sheriff's Office spokesman Detective Salvador Zuno says the sergeant has been in the department for at least 15 years. He did not know how long the man had been on the FBI task force.

He says department-issued guns must be locked down inside a car. He says he doesn't know if the sergeant's guns had been secured.

A Bay Area News Group investigation published last year found that at least 944 police-issued weapons had been either stolen, lost or couldn't be accounted for since 2010.
