New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. (NUMMI) was conceived as a joint venture between General Motors and Toyota, but today the partnership is history and the plant is closing down later this week. With over 4,700 jobs lost, we look at the impact on the local economy and at prospects for retraining workers. More broadly, we’ll discuss the state of manufacturing in California, already suffering from losing nearly a fifth of its work force over the past five years.

Guests:

Rachael Myrow, reporter, host of KQED's The California Report and author of the "Shifting Gears" blog on the future of manufacturing jobs in California

Jeffrey Michael, director of the Business Forecasting Center at the University of the Pacific Eberhardt School of Business

Maria Gregg, maintenance worker at NUMMI

Debbie Duplichan, rapid response program coordinator for Worknet with the Employment and Economic Development Department of San Joaquin County

Juan Castillo, NUMMI employee and union representative since 2006
