My name is Leslie Sbrocco and I’m the host of Check, Please! Bay Area. Each week, I will be sharing my tasting notes about the wine the guests and I drank on set during the taping of the show. Also, in my “What to Sip” suggestions, I choose one restaurant from each show and offer tips for selecting libations to enjoy with your meal.
Wine of the Week:
2004 Capcanes, “Mas Donis Barrica,” Montsant, Spain $12
If earthy, smooth reds are to your taste, seek out the winning wines from Capcanes. A unique cooperative winery located the mountainous Montsant region of northeastern Spain, this Garnacha-based red — loaded with mineral aromas and mouthfilling fruit — is one of my favorite value wines.
What to Sip: Forbes Island
If you’re heading to Forbes Island for a unique San Francisco treat, you’ll be treated to a small but reasonably priced and well-chosen list of wines. Look for imports such as:
Jean Grivot, Nuits St.-Georges “Les Chamois,” Burgundy, France $64
With the wild mushroom ragout appetizer and roasted pork chop with sweet potatoes, order this Pinot Noir from France. It’s tough to find red Burgundy priced less than $75 in most restaurants, so this elegant, silky red stands out.
