Every March, thousands of bands, industry types, and music fans converge on Austin, Texas for the annual South by Southwest Music Festival. This year’s fest takes place March 15-20 in venues all over Austin, and, as is the case every year, a large number of Bay Area/Northern California bands are making the trek to Texas. As the mixtapes below indicate, the bands performing range from SF indie legends to talented up-and-comers, and a number of them — including The Dodos, Tune-Yards, Shannon and the Clams, and Hunx & His Punx — have highly anticipated albums coming out later this year.
Visit The Bay Bridged for complete coverage before, during, and after the madness of SXSW 2011. For now, enjoy these tapes showcasing the breadth of Bay Area talent participating in the year’s fest. Don’t worry, you don’t have to be heading down to Austin to enjoy these collections of great local talent. In fact, attendees and non-attendees alike can consider these tapes a sampling of many of the Bay Area bands that will be (and, for some, have already been) receiving national attention in 2011.
