Cell phone hackers have just won a major victory from the federal government. The Associated Press reported that the practice known as ‘jailbreaking,’ in which owners get around the electronic locks on their smart phones is permitted.Jailbreaking has often been attributed to users of Apple?s iPhone, who seek to utilize features or install software not pre-approved by the company. This is one of a handful of exemptions from a federal law that prevents circumventing technical protections on copyrights. Another new exemption would allow cell phone users to break access controls and switch their wireless carriers. This may be welcome news to iPhone users who have complained about the poor signal quality with AT&T, Apple?s exclusive iPhone carrier.
