Sonya Cotton is part of a local indie folk-rock scene brimming with talent, and her sophomore album Red River, released last year, is a haunting and moving work. Recorded with Scott McDowell, and featuring the contributions of over a dozen guest musicians, Red River’s diverse instrumentation adds to its detail-rich character. Cotton’s songs musically and lyrically unfold over multiple listens; there’s a thoughtfulness at work here that she also demonstrated in our very enjoyable interview.

We sat down with Sonya earlier this year to discuss her origins and the process of writing and recording Red River. We’ve also included four songs from the album in the show (“Red River,” “Knowing Mother,” “Canal” and “Hilltop Hymn”).
