Will Bird is a retired Cree Bush pilot who, as the novel begins, is lying comatose in a hospital after running afoul of some locals in his hometown of Moose Factory, Ontario; he is narrating from within his coma, remembering as a way of clinging to life. Annie Bird, Will’s niece, is a tough, vibrant loner whose sole interests up to now have been hunting and trapping. She comes to Will’s bedside every day to tell him of the perilous journey she has just made in search of her younger sister Suzanne, a successful fashion model who had left the reserve for New York City and is now missing. Broken in different ways, Will and Annie are haunted by loss, and the stories that unfold around them are rife with heartbreak, fierce love, violence, disappointment, and the bonds that hold a family together. As Will and Annie reveal their secrets to each other, a remarkable saga of resilience and destiny takes shape.
