Serpent in the Garden of Dreams unfolds in two alternating narratives — one of Tildy Glick’s lonesome present and the other of her difficult childhood. In the present, adult Tildy struggles to find her own ground in the face of her fears of abandonment when a year-long relationship ends. In the childhood sections, 13-year-old Tildy tries to comfort herself during a tumultuous summer when her mother takes a married lover and kicks her father out of the house. Throughout the course of the book, Tildy must learn her own truths beyond the specter of the early relationships she has both clung to and feared.
