"content": "\u003cp>In 2015, Bay Area lawyer and activist Sarah Jornsay-Silverberg found herself in Paris representing island nations at the United Nations Climate Change Conference. She was thrilled to be there.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[pullquote size='medium' align='right' citation='Robin Cooper, a psychiatrist in San Francisco']‘We are biologically wired to respond with anxiety to alert us to respond to real threats.’[/pullquote]As the event progressed, however, “it was really clear that we were not going to achieve what we’d hoped,” she said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>What she and her colleagues had hoped for was a deal to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius this century and a binding mechanism to enforce that. What they got was the\u003ca href=\"https://unfccc.int/process-and-meetings/the-paris-agreement/the-paris-agreement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Paris Agreement\u003c/a>, which aims to keep global temperature rise to “well below 2 degrees Celsius” — and which countries have signed on to through voluntary pledges.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Instead of celebrating in the streets, she found herself curled up in her hostel bed, crying.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003ca href=\"https://ww2.kqed.org/news/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2019/09/CoveringClimateNow.jpg\">\u003cimg loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-11777126\" src=\"https://ww2.kqed.org/news/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2019/09/CoveringClimateNow.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"223\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https://cdn.kqed.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2019/09/CoveringClimateNow.jpg 800w, https://cdn.kqed.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2019/09/CoveringClimateNow-160x160.jpg 160w, https://cdn.kqed.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2019/09/CoveringClimateNow-550x550.jpg 550w, https://cdn.kqed.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2019/09/CoveringClimateNow-470x470.jpg 470w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 223px) 100vw, 223px\">\u003c/a>The depression that struck Jornsay-Silverberg, 34, in 2015 still comes and goes today. She worries about ecosystems, native people and their habitats, the Amazon. She is also grieving a vision of her future that may no longer become a reality.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“People like myself are deciding whether [we] even want to have children,” she said. When she was younger, she always assumed that she would.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cb>The Rise of Eco-Anxiety\u003c/b>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Environmental activists like Jornsay-Silverberg are not the only ones feeling overwhelmed with despair as the climate changes. While “eco-anxiety” is most commonly used to describe these feelings, therapists and others have bandied about different labels, too: climate anxiety, climate despair, eco-despair and eco-grief.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The American Psychological Association even published \u003ca href=\"https://www.apa.org/news/press/releases/2017/03/mental-health-climate.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a guide for therapists\u003c/a> to help them assist their patients. In it, they wrote, “the psychological responses to climate change, such as conflict avoidance, fatalism, fear, helplessness and resignation are growing. Unlike an irrational fear, eco-anxiety is a healthy response to a serious risk, she said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“We are biologically wired to respond with anxiety to alert us to respond to real threats,” she said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Despair’s Antidote \u003c/strong>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>So if the negative aspects of climate change won’t be going away, how do we “treat” eco-anxiety?\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Experts seem to agree on a three-part strategy:\u003c/p>\n\u003col>\n\u003cli>\u003cstrong>Come together in community. \u003c/strong>“Find allies who understand what [you’re] feeling… and get together with them,” said Craig Chalquist, a psychologist and professor at the California Institute of Integral Studies. He said it can even be something informal. When she was younger, she always assumed that she would.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cb>The Rise of Eco-Anxiety\u003c/b>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Environmental activists like Jornsay-Silverberg are not the only ones feeling overwhelmed with despair as the climate changes. While “eco-anxiety” is most commonly used to describe these feelings, therapists and others have bandied about different labels, too: climate anxiety, climate despair, eco-despair and eco-grief.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The American Psychological Association even published \u003ca href=\"https://www.apa.org/news/press/releases/2017/03/mental-health-climate.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a guide for therapists\u003c/a> to help them assist their patients. In it, they wrote, “the psychological responses to climate change, such as conflict avoidance, fatalism, fear, helplessness and resignation are growing.
