Youth Radio is a crucial recording arts and media program for Bay Area high school and college students located in the heart of downtown Oakland.

Some of its alumni have gone on to accomplish great things: Rayana Jay, for instance, is a rising R&B star who recently toured the country with rapper Junglepussy; 1-O.A.K. of the prolific HNRL collective got his start in music production at YR and went on to teach there; and KQED Arts’ columnist and Rightnowish host Pendarvis Harshaw experienced his first taste of audio journalism at the nonprofit.

Just a few days before his April 16 show at the Fillmore with French singer Jain, Berkeley rapper Rexx Life Raj is throwing a benefit party for Youth Radio with the help of his label, San Francisco’s Empire.

The ‘Good & Proper’ party, taking place April 13 at Code and Canvas in San Francisco, stars a slate of taste-making DJs and producers: hailing from the U.K., multi-instrumentalist Romderful works with influential California label Soulection. Experimental beatmaker Mike Gao, who has production credits on Rexx Life Raj’s acclaimed Father Figure 2: Flourish album, will also DJ, along with Rexx Life Raj’s tour DJ, DJ Shellheart, and Text Me Records producer and frequent G-Eazy collaborator Julia Lewis.

A portion of the event’s proceeds go to YR Media’s music program, Remix Your Life. Details here.
