My co-host this week, KQED Youth Advisory Board Member Nick Abraham, brought us this event and we’re so glad.

He volunteers along with other young people at the all ages venue 924 Gilman, a historic venue in North Berkeley for punk bands since the 1980s. The club is hosting its second annual Pride Prom, with a special welcome for LGBTQ high school students, though everyone is invited. Nick’s friends booked the bands for the prom this year, including San Francisco’s The Total Bettys, a terrific San Francisco pop punk band. They’re led by lead vocalist Maggie Grabmeier, whose powerful voice and smart lyrics make you want to pay attention. They’re playing along with A.W., the Homobiles, Polythene Pam, and Little Debbie & The Crusaders.

Nick says there will also be several zines (DIY magazines) to read through, and an informational safe sex table by Planned Parenthood Mar Monte. Nick’s promising a really safe space.

The Pride Prom is May 5 at 924 Gilman. Details here.
