The Growlers come to San Jose and San Francisco in September (Photo: Courtesy of The Growlers)

The Growlers built their reputation as purveyors of a genre all their own — “beach goth” — with sunny, party-friendly guitar licks and and dour (if tongue-in-cheek) lyrics. On their most recent album, City Club, they seem to be reviving an ’80s sound that reminds me of Boy George. For my co-host Jamedra, it’s enough to know that they’re among Ellen DeGeneres’ favorite bands. But boy, it’ll sure be challenging to get a ticket when they visit the Bay Area. Your best bet is their show on Wednesday, Sept. 6, at The Ritz in San Jose. Details here. They then play four nights at The Independent in San Francisco, with all but the Monday show sold out as I write this. Details here.
