"content": "\u003cp>There is a high likelihood that, if you reside in the United States, it’s been a while since you’ve thought about \u003ca href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russell_Brand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Russell Brand\u003c/a>. Seven years ago, the British comedian, actor and writer brought his brand of big-haired troublemaking to our screens both large and small, in a manner that felt like the beginning of something huge. So where the hell did he go?\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Brand first hosted the \u003ca href=\"http://www.mtv.com/video-playlists/2ydpmy/russell-brand-s-greatest-mtv-moments-so-far/9840tl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MTV VMAs\u003c/a> in 2008, after his breakout role in \u003cem>\u003ca href=\"http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0800039/?ref_=nv_sr_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Forgetting Sarah Marshall\u003c/a>\u003c/em>, and immediately\u003cem> \u003c/em>caused a furor after he used the spotlight to refer to George W. Bush as a “retarded cowboy,” as well as make fun of the Jonas Brothers’ pro-celibacy stance. Nevertheless, he was invited to hand out \u003ca href=\"http://www.mtv.com/news/2924701/vma-statue-moonman/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Moonmen\u003c/a> again in 2009 and 2012, and found himself with his own \u003ca href=\"http://www.cc.com/full-episodes/9bhrcj/stand-up-library-russell-brand-in-new-york-city-season-1-ep-101\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Comedy Central stand-up special\u003c/a>, as well as starring roles in \u003ca href=\"http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1226229/?ref_=nv_sr_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u003cem>Get Him to the Greek\u003c/em>\u003c/a> (2010), \u003cem>\u003ca href=\"http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1323594/?ref_=nv_sr_2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Despicable Me\u003c/a>\u003c/em> (2010), \u003ca href=\"http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1334512/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u003cem>Arthur\u003c/em>\u003c/a> (2011, in a role \u003cem>New York Magazine\u003c/em> described as “\u003ca href=\"https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2011/apr/15/russell-brand-arthur-hollywood-rise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">career-killing\u003c/a>”), \u003ca href=\"http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1274300/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u003cem>The Tempest\u003c/em> \u003c/a>(2011), \u003ca href=\"http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1411704/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u003cem>Hop\u003c/em>\u003c/a> (2011), and (let’s just forget this one ever happened) \u003ca href=\"http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1336608/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u003cem>Rock of Ages\u003c/em>\u003c/a> (2012). After their 2010 wedding in India—the basis for Perry’s performance of \u003ca href=\"http://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-body/news/katy-perry-finally-shares-wedding-images----at-the-grammys--2011132\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">“Not Like the Movies”\u003c/a> at the Grammys three months later—\u003cem>Marie Claire\u003c/em> called them “one of Hollywood’s hottest pairings.” By the time Brand had famously broken up with Perry via text and filed for divorce, the cover of \u003cem>US Weekly\u003c/em> screamed “MARRIED TO A CRAZY MAN” instead.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>There is an assumption for many people on this side of the Atlantic that Brand’s disappearance is related to the fact that he was only famous because of Perry; that once those rings came off, his career died because he could no longer ride her coattails. (“Now he doesn’t have Katy Perry, he’s just a nobody,” we hear at the start of his \u003cem>Brand: A Second Coming\u003c/em> documentary.) Others suggest that his films just never did well enough at the box office to keep him in business.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The truth is far more complex—and far more interesting.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>It is true that the consistently unfiltered Brand is a difficult prospect to sell to American audiences. His distinctly European flamboyance is off-putting for conservatives, as is the sexually crude wordplay he favors (which has also landed him \u003ca href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Russell_Brand_Show_prank_telephone_calls_row\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in hot water\u003c/a> in his native England). His tendency toward verbose flourishes can be read by American audiences as pretentious and self-indulgent. It’s also true that when one tries to squeeze Brand into any kind of structured format, he is rarely able to shine—as FX found out when they gave him a chat show, \u003cem>\u003ca href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brand_X_with_Russell_Brand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brand X\u003c/a>\u003c/em>, which lasted just two seasons.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[aside postid=arts_13935238]The real root of Brand’s absence from our screens has less to do with ratings than it does with his own relationship with guilt, fame and spirituality. The key turning point for Brand was \u003ca href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msMRZZIw6g0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a trip to Africa\u003c/a> on behalf of Comic Relief in 2013. Having spent days witnessing dire poverty and suffering, surrounded by children orphaned by AIDS, he returned to the opulence of Hollywood life \u003ca href=\"http://www.cosmopolitan.co.uk/entertainment/news/a39349/russell-brand-documentary-katy-perry/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">and declared\u003c/a>: “Oh my fucking God, I’m living this life that’s the very thing I detest: vapid, vacuous celebrity.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The turnaround was fast. In 2013, Brand guest-edited \u003ca href=\"http://www.newstatesman.com/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u003cem>The New Statesman\u003c/em>\u003c/a>—an award-winning British publication concerned with politics and current affairs. Shortly afterwards, he appeared on BBC’s \u003ca href=\"http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006mk25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u003cem>Newsnight\u003c/em>\u003c/a>, an equally stuffy and intellectually minded television show. The interview caused adoration and outrage in equal measure from the British public, with Brand talking about his unwillingness to vote and his desire for revolution. The usually unflappable host, Jeremy Paxman, was visibly irritated by the whole thing.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YR4CseY9pk\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>When Brand talks about his personal philosophies, he does so from a place of experience. Before the \u003cem>Newsnight\u003c/em> interview, his years of seeking peace and fulfillment through drug abuse and promiscuous sex were artfully and amusingly relayed in 2007’s foolishly titled but thought-provoking autobiography, \u003ca href=\"https://www.amazon.com/My-Booky-Wook-Memoir-Stand-Up/dp/0061857807\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u003cem>My Booky Wook\u003c/em>\u003c/a>.
