At least 45 Tenderloin residents have been displaced after a three-alarm fire in a residential complex early Friday morning.

The blaze on Golden Gate Avenue was contained at 5:30 a.m., and the San Francisco Fire Department said no injuries have been reported.

Fire crews rescued multiple residents and two cats; video posted to social media showed firefighters holding an oxygen mask up to a rescued cat wrapped in a blanket.

More than 100 firefighters responded to the six-story building just after 3 a.m. The blaze quickly escalated to a three-alarm fire, affecting the top floor, attic and roof, according to SFFD.

“The firefighters executed an impressive and aggressive attack on the fire, which originated on the sixth floor, successfully preventing it from spreading to the lower floors and nearby buildings,” the department said in a statement.

Officials said the building’s old structure made for heavy fire conditions, including multiple light wells, laths and plaster construction.

Currently, 45 residents who have been displaced are being accommodated in a city bus on-site, and the American Red Cross has been called for assistance.

The Fire Department said the number of residents who have been displaced could change.

“This incident exemplified traditional, aggressive firefighting tactics, which ultimately contained the fire within the structure,” SFFD said.
