One of the victims of the crash landing of Asiana Airlines Flight 214 initially survived the July 6 crash but was killed when she was run over by a vehicle--probably by a fire truck rushing to the chaotic scene along Runway 28L, officials said Friday.
San Mateo County Coroner Robert Foucrault said 16-year-old Ye Mengyuan died from multiple blunt-force injuries that are consistent with being run over by a vehicle. San Francisco Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White said investigators believe the girl was struck by a specialized fire truck based at the airport. She was on the ground and not standing up when she was struck, according to Hayes-White.
"Obviously, it's devastating news to us," Hayes-White said.
She said the Fire Department has apologized to Ye's family and is continuing to reach out to them via Mayor Ed Lee's office and the Chinese Consulate in San Francisco.
She also said the department is reviewing its procedures in light of the incident: "Every aspect of our response that day is under review." The San Francisco Police Department is investigating Ye's death.
