The Sacramento-based Capital Unity Council was formed in 1999 in response to a series of hate crimes in the region dating back to 1993. The Council develops educational programs, responds to acts of hate and bias, and is building a Unity Center to present the history of diversity in California.

Community United Against Violence (CUAV) is a 20-year-old multicultural organization working to end violence against and within Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer/Questioning communities. CUAV offers a 24-hour confidential, multilingual support line as well as free counseling, legal advocacy and emergency assistance to survivors of domestic violence, hate violence and sexual assault. CUAV uses education as a violence prevention tool through its speakers' bureau, youth program and domestic violence prevention program.

The Marin Human Rights Roundtable on Hate Violence is a coalition of diverse community-based organizations, government entities, and individuals dedicated to the prevention and elimination of hate crime and hate violence in the county of Marin. The roundtable was convened in 1996 by the Marin Community Foundation in response to increasing public concern about hate incidents in Marin. The roundtable's purpose is to build a consensus that hate violence in all forms is unacceptable.

The San Francisco-based ACLU of Northern California works to protect civil liberties in the region, from the rights of immigrants and reproductive rights of women to the rights of Lesbians and Gays. In addition to direct litigation, the ACLU is involved in public education, legislative lobbying efforts and grass-roots organizing. After September 11, 2001, the ACLU collaborated with other local and national groups to document the backlash against certain ethnic and racial groups.

The nation's oldest legal and civil rights organization serving low-income Asian- and Pacific-American communities, the Asian Law Caucus provides technical assistance and legal representation to victims of hate crimes and discrimination, and works with targeted communities to build awareness about cases. ALC works with these communities to transform awareness into pressure and to ensure that law enforcement agencies vigorously investigate and prosecute hate crimes. ALC also co-authors the annual "Audit of Violence against Asian Pacific Americans" with the National Asian Pacific American Legal Consortium and the Asian Pacific American Legal Center.

Learning about hate crime -- how to prevent it, respond to it and prosecute it -- is the focus of the Greater Sacramento Area Hate Crimes Task Force, sponsored and administered by the U. S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of California. The task force meets several times a year, helping law enforcement leaders and members of the community work together in the fight against hate crime.

The Lawyers' Committee of the San Francisco Bay Area supports the rights of minority and low-income individuals by offering free legal assistance in civil matters and by litigating cases that have the potential to improve the lives of people often ignored by the legal system. In the wake of September 11, the Lawyers' Committee provided leadership after witnessing a severe backlash against Arabs, South Asians and Muslims as well as individuals perceived to be members of these groups. Within days of the attacks, the committee implemented a program to assist victims of discrimination and hate crimes.
