After a woman places an ad in the Chicago Times offering a reward for information that will exonerate her son, newsman P.J. McNeal (James Stewart) is assigned to look into the 11-year old story of Frank Wiecek (Richard Conte), sentenced to life in prison for killing a cop. At first skeptical, McNeal eventually begins to believe that Frank might, in fact, be innocent. The film won an Edgar as Best Picture of the Year.
