In a grim world where the only chance for a better life can be found inside a pool hall, a young pool player, Eddie Felson (Paul Newman), hustles his way across the country to New York where he takes on the legendary champ Minnesota Fats (Jackie Gleason) and loses. Penniless and alone, Eddie falls in love with alcoholic cripple Sarah Packard (Piper Laurie). He goes back to hustling in small pool halls, but runs into some thugs who break his thumbs. Eddie then teams up with a gambler, Bert Gordon (George C. Scott), and with his backing hustles his way into a big win from a wealthy billiard enthusiast, Findlay (Murray Hamilton). Meanwhile, Sarah becomes involved with both Eddie and Bert, leading to tragic consequences. In the dramatic finale, Eddie takes on Minnesota Fats once again, knowing that this confrontation will set the tone for the rest of his life. Directed by Robert Rossen, based on the novel by Walter Tevis.
