This series presents engaging, contemporary, fresh views about these religious traditions, belief systems or philosophies, as it travels around the world to meet teachers, scholars and practitioners to discover and see what the eternal questions are all about. With intros and closing comments by John Cleese, who has a strong interest in these types of programs, it blends compelling film segments with engaging conversations as it engages such well-known public television voices as Deepak Chopra, Karen Armstrong and Robert Thuerman to shed new light on our deepest eternal questions around the human quest for meaning, truth and wisdom. Hosted by author Phil Cousineau, critically acclaimed Global Spirit takes viewers on an engaging, experiential journey. Exploring such ideas as "Forgiveness and Healing," "Oneness" and "The Spiritual Quest," "Sacred Music" and "Sacred Art" and "Human Consciousness," the series looks at relationships between ancient wisdom traditions, world religions and modern science, showing viewers why these ideas might matter to us.

Oneness: The Big Picture (Episode #109H)
KQED Plus: Tue, May 14, 2013 -- 11:00 PM
While deeply embedded in the core teachings of many great religions and almost all mystical and native traditions, the concept of "Oneness" or "Unity Consciousness" is now being explored by a growing number of scientists, who are applying the principle of Oneness to all life and the exquisite mechanism through which all living systems function and relate. In this Global Spirit episode, Deepak Chopra, a physician and best-selling author of texts on mind-body healing, shares his philosophical insights on Oneness, with Riane Eisler, an anthropologist and, best-selling author (The Chalice & the Blade). Against a background of filmed interviews with teachers from all religious traditions, audiences can witness a memorable, occasionally contentious discussion that attempts to "connect all the dots".

The program features Sraddhalu Ranade, a teacher and scientist from the ancient Hindu tradition of Vedanta, who comes to the Global Spirit studio from the Sri Aurobindo ashram in South India to meet Peter Russell, an author and spiritual practitioner with decades of relevant research and a background in physics and psychology from Cambridge University.

The Mystical Experience (Episode #107H)
KQED Plus: Wed, May 1, 2013 -- 5:00 AM
From Moses on the mountain, to Jesus in the desert to Mohammed in his cave, "the mystical experience" has been acknowledged as the core event that forms the foundation of many great religions. In this Global Spirit program, host Phil Cousineau joins Benedictine monk Brother David Steindl-Rast, Rabbi Jonathan Omer-Man and sufi mystic Maata Lynn Barron to shed light on some of the common attributes of those who yearn for and reach, however momentarily, what they describe as a direct experience of God or the Divine. "The Mystical Experience" explores both experiential and analytical approaches to this rich subject.
