An Evening with Valerie Simpson in Honor of Nick Ashford Previous Broadcasts

KQED Life: Sun, Feb 19, 2012 -- 10:00 PM

An inside look into the life and career of the legendary singer/songwriter duo, Ashford & Simpson. Taped in November 2011, it features the first public interview of R& B icon Valerie Simpson since the death of her husband and songwriting partner, the acclaimed Nick Ashford. Simpson is revealing and witty, as she talks with veteran journalist Gwen Ifill about meeting Ashford, their partnership as a sought-after songwriting team, and ultimately their marriage and life together.
Ashford & Simpson penned many hits including: "I'm Every Woman", "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", "You're All I Need To Get By", "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing", and "Reach Out and Touch (Somebody's Hand)" for artists such as Chaka Khan, Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. Later, they went on to a successful career as performers with songs like "Solid." This program includes performances by Grammy Award Winner Patti Austin ("You're All I Need To Get By" and "The Boss") and Kindred The Family Soul ("It Seems To Hang On.") Simpson also performs "I Don't Need Nobody's Help," "Silly," "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing," and "Ain't No Mountain High Enough."
