Bluegrass Underground Previous Broadcasts

Sarah Jarosz (Episode #203H)

KQED Life: Mon, Oct 29, 2012 -- 5:30 AM

A veteran musician who'd released two CDs before turning 20, Sarah Jarosz has gone from teenage bluegrass hotshot to fully-realized innovative artist in less time than many of us spent in braces. Playing mandolin, octave mandolin, banjo and guitar while singing in a rich, throaty voice, Jarosz creates a staggeringly original sound with her new ensemble, featuring violinist Alex Hargreaves and cellist Nathaniel Smith. Their melodic interplay weaves rock rhythms, classical textures and Appalachian melodies.

Jerry Douglas (Episode #202H)

KQED Life: Mon, Oct 29, 2012 -- 5:00 AM

As a 2004 National Heritage Fellow (America's highest honor for traditional artists) and 13-time Grammy winner, Jerry Douglas has, frankly, re-invented his instrument, playing the dobro with unprecedented speed and haunting lyricism. Starting as a teen, Douglas performed with J.D. Crowe, Emmylou Harris, the Country Gentlemen, Eric Clapton, Paul Simon, Elvis Costello and James Taylor, all while working as one of Nashville's most in-demand session players. Douglas is a longtime featured member of Alison Krauss & Union Station.

Bluegrass Underground Season Mixer (Episode #112H)

KQED Life: Mon, Oct 29, 2012 -- 4:30 AM

A compilation set of absolutely great cuts from Season One that we didn't have time for in the first eleven shows, including Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder, Mike Farris & the McCrary Sisters, John Cowan Band, Cherryholmes and Will Hoge. It's an Americana-Roots-Grass Sampler!

Jim Lauderdale (Episode #204H)

KQED Life: Mon, Oct 22, 2012 -- 5:30 AM

Equal parts Rhinestone Cowboy and Borscht Belt comic, two-time Grammy-winning singer/songwriter/guitarist Jim Lauderdale's talents dance across the worlds of country (writing hits for George Jones and George Strait), rock (writing with Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter), Americana and bluegrass (with icon Ralph Stanley). Featuring Randy Kohrs on tenor vocals/dobro and the Steeldrivers' Richard Bailey on banjo, the Jim Lauderdale Bluegrass Band is unique and an absolute must-see performance.

David Mayfield Parade (Episode #205H)

KQED Life: Mon, Oct 22, 2012 -- 5:00 AM

Raised on show business in a family band, David Mayfield made his name with award-winning progressive bluegrass group Cadillac Sky. Once solo, the singer/guitarist expanded his unique, sonic arsenal to take in acoustic-alternative and cutting-edge Americana, mixing it all in with his freewheeling sense of humor and remarkable showmanship in a set that's edgy in every sense of the word.

The Civil Wars (Episode #201H)

KQED Life: Sun, Oct 7, 2012 -- 11:30 PM

From multiple Grammy wins (Best Folk and Best Country Albums) to the The Hunger Games' soundtrack, 2012 is a breakout year for the Civil Wars. Their meteoric rise is no surprise to those who have witnessed Joy Williams' and John Paul White's artful performances. Intricately woven phrasing and airtight harmonies mark the minimalist duo's powerfully rendered murder ballads and astonishingly frank songs on the paradoxical nature of love.
