Amsterdam City Guide 2 (Episode #1110)

KQED World: Sat, Mar 30, 2013 -- 8:00 PM

Brianna and Jonathan Atherton travel to Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands that was built around a network of beautiful canals overlooked by the gabled mansions of 17th century merchants. Jonathan visits the Rijksmuseum, which has a magnificent collection of paintings by the great Dutch Masters, while Brianna marvels at the artistic genius of Vincent van Gogh at the Van Gogh Museum. She then visits a replica of an East India cargo, discovering how the great wealth of the city was extracted from the Dutch colonies in Asia, while on the other side Jonathan observes a dockland squat. Briana later ventures to the Anne Frank House and hears about her family's last days in hiding from the Nazis. In stark contrast, Jonathan ends his trip partying at the Gay Parade, one of Amsterdam's biggest events of the year.

Eastern Canada (Episode #1126)

The 3000km journey starts on the Avalon Peninsula, in Newfoundland & Labrador, the oldest and most easterly part of North America. Though it was the first province discovered by Europeans, it was the last to join Canada in 1949 - a testimony to its independent spirit. Next, GT travels south west to the maritime provinces of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick, known for their rugged coastlines, natural beauty and delicious fresh fish. GT then heads inland to say bonjour to Quebec's European culture and old-world charm and party at the New France Festival. Last is Ontario, where we experience the dizzying heights of Toronto's mega CN Tower and the thundering magnificence of the Niagara Falls.

Paraguay and Uruguay (Episode #1125)

Holly Morris discovers two South American countries that may share a similar name but couldn't be more different. Beginning her journey in Uruguay, Holly explores its beautiful coastline, often referred to as the Riviera of the Southern Hemisphere. Later, Holly boards a plane and heads northwest to the mysterious land locked nation of Paraguay. In contrast to Uruguay, Paraguay is one of the least visited countries on the South American continent

Panama & Colombia (Episode #1122)

Megan takes a trip through Colombia and Panama, two countries that are refreshingly untouched by mass tourism. In Panama City, Megan tries different Panama hats, which she learns are really from Ecuador but were misnamed as far back as the1850s when Americans were building the railroad during the Gold Rush. She visits the Panama Canal, the crucial byway that generates $1 billion a year for the Panamanian economy. In Colombia, Megan finds herself witness to a point-blank shooting. Undeterred, she decides to learn more about the country's crime-ridden history. She stops by Bogota's police museum to see an exhibition of the infamous drug dealer Pablo Escobar, and then visits the Caribbean coast and the beautiful historic city of Cartagena, where she learns about the city's Spanish colonial past and listens to some of Colombia's most popular rhythms, Vallenato.

      Next week, Sutro Tower will be switching most stations to their auxiliary antennas. KQED TV will be at half power on the lower auxiliary antenna, this will affect some of our Over The Air viewers. Maintenance is scheduled on August 21-25 from 9am through 4pm daily.       (DT25.1 through 25.3) Recent storms have taken out dozens of trees on Fremont Peak, which in turn have taken down power lines leading to the transmission tower located on the peak.
