The Television Race Initiative (TRI) is a national model designed to work within the public television system to help stations further the role that they play in their immediate communities. Through the use of specific public television programs, TRI brings together community-based groups and individuals to spark dialogues around critical social issues.
Locally, TRI has worked with KQED to develop long-term relationships with local nonprofit groups, youth groups, faith-based organizations, educators, civil rights groups, etc., utilizing the broadcasts of these programs to help support their mission-based goals. KQED and TRI have organized numerous public forums using the content of documentary films as a catalyst for discussion. Some of these films include:
KQED has also programmed locally-produced shows (Bay Window, Forum) to reflect the same topics addressed in TRI-featured programs.
