TV Weekly Schedule: KQED 9HD

New! We have redesigned the TV Weekly Schedules. Learn about the New Features.

1) Channel Tabs: You now have the ability to easily access all channel schedules by clicking on the tabs at the top of the schedule.

2) Complete Day Schedule: The schedule now covers full days. Previously it just displayed primetime. Click on specific dates to link to the daily schedule for that day.

3) Collapsible Dayparts: The schedule now has collapsible dayparts for customization and easy viewing. Click on the white daypart text with the plus sign icon to expand the schedule for that time frame. Click on the yellow daypart text with the minus sign icon to collapse that daypart schedule. The default keeps Overnight collapsed to allow Morning to be on top of page. We will be adding a feature soon that will retain your preferences as you tab through the channels and weeks for the current session.

4) Customizable Printer Version: The improved Printer version allows you to customize how you want your schedule to print. You can print out channels individually now and can decide what dayparts you want to be printed by collapsing and expanding the desired dayparts. So, if you just want to print out the evening schedule you can collapse the dayparts to only expose evening and it will print just the evening schedule. The Printer version also specifies the date and time it was printed and provides the link for most updated info.

5) Program Descriptions on Same Page: Program descriptions are now accessible as overlays on the same page. When you click on a program/episode title the description will popup on the same page. There will be a link in the description to access the main program page with other airing times.

6) Email Reminders on Same Page: Email reminders are now part of the program description overlay. If an email reminder is not available due to time frame (must be 25 hours before airing) the reminder does not show up.

We are hoping these changes enhance your experience accessing and watching KQED/KTEH TV programs.

Brain Fitness Special

duration 59:18 CC STEREO TVG

If you are 50 years old today, you'll probably live into your mid-80s. If you live into your mid-80s, there's a more than even probability that your brain will decline in function before you die. At age 85, there's almost an even-money chance that you'll be identified as senile which will dramatically impair your ability to live alone, your ability to make your own decisions and live a full and interesting life until the day you die.
The problem is more than just lapses in memory. There are 3 root causes of problems in the aging brain: (1) an increasing signal-to-noise problem in processing information collected by our senses, (2) a decline in the production of key brain chemicals and (3) a slowing in processing speed. These problems make it increasingly difficult to accurately receive, store, retrieve and manipulate information received from any of the 5 senses.
The good news is that we can change this! It is not inevitable that we will be in a state of dementia at the time of our death. We know that we need physical exercise to maintain our physical strength throughout our lives, our brain also needs to be exercised in order to retain our mental acuity throughout whatever our lifespan. Over 50 neuroscientists have worked to create a system for strengthening the brain and making it perform with more agility, speed and comprehension. Host: Dr. Michael Merzenich.

Marilyn Monroe: Still Life

(#1904E) duration 56:08 CC STEREO TVPG-S

There are the movie roles, but it is the still images - the iconic face, expressions and poses - that make up our collective memory of Marilyn. She was, arguably, the most photographed person ever. Her relationship with the camera produced an enduring body of work that still dazzles and moves us, evoking both desire and pathos. These photographs are an ageless testament to her grace, guts and sexiness - her humor and vulnerability. She understood their power, and she exploited it. She created, and curated, her own image - lips puckered to the lens, inviting us to kiss her back. She would be 80 now. She died more than 40 years ago. We look back through Norman Mailer, Gloria Steinem and Hugh Heffner, as Marilyn persists in her image.

Girl's Life

duration 56:46 STEREO TVPG

This program explores what it means to be a girl in America today. On the surface, it seems clear. The new American girl is becoming more and more powerful -- and she knows it. She competes on the athletic field and she regularly outperforms the boys to her left and right in the classroom. But this picture of empowerment is deceiving. As a society we are starting to realize that in middle and high school, girls' self-confidence takes a nose-dive. Far too often, the once strong, self-assured prepubescent girl becomes docile and fearful. These girls begin, in the now-famous words of psychologist Carol Gilligan, "to lose their voices." And with this loss of self comes a drop in academic performance as well. This program brings together the latest scientific research on the psychological, physical, emotional and spiritual development of girls, to help parents, educators and all concerned better understand them. The program is based in part on author Rachel Simmons' book "Odd Girl Out."

Going On 13

duration 56:44 CC STEREO DVI TVPG

This program takes an unflinching look into the face of modern-day puberty through the eyes of four urban girls of color living in California's Bay Area. The film, shot over four years, enters the worlds of Ariana, Isha, Rosie and Esme as they negotiate the precious, precarious moments between girlhood and young womanhood. Cameras travel with the girls - an African-American, a Mexican-American, a mixed-race Latina and an immigrant from India - from their elementary school, where double-Dutch and hand-games rule, to the crowded and noisy halls of middle school, where they deal with the realities of a compromised sex-ed curriculum, Internet chat rooms and malicious gossip. Using a mix of intimate interviews, cinema verite and stop-motion animation, this film chronicles the girls' coming of age: their blossoming desires and growing sense of responsibility, their hopes for the future, their difficulties learning to love themselves and their escalating tugs-of-war with their parents.

Joan Crawford: Always The Star

duration 54:15 CC STEREO TVG

This glamorous and hugely popular actress raised herself from brutal poverty to Academy Award-winning stardom through guts, determination and hard work. During her 50-year career, she made more than 80 films. But her obsessive perfectionism led to a later caricature of coat-hanger-wielding harridan that even the adoration of her fans could not counter. Still, she has endured as one of the most popular icons of the movies, an early role model to young women who were drawn to her image as a stylish magnetic power and an actress of unquestioned independence. Clips are included from the following Joan Crawford films: Sally, Irene and Mary (1925), Our Dancing Daughters (1928), Grand Hotel (1932), Dancing Lady (1933), The Gorgeous Hussy (1936), The Women (1939), A Woman's Face (1941), Mildred Pierce (1945) , Humoresque (1946), Possessed (1947), Sudden Fear (1952), Johnny Guitar (1954), Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962) and Strait Jacket (1964).

Maria and Luis tell Cookie Monster that apples grow on trees, and share a story about how they planted an apple tree when they were younger. In fact, they are eating apples from the apple tree they planted many years ago! Cookie Monster gets an idea! What if he grew a chocolate chip cookie tree? Cookie Monster plants a chocolate chip in dirt and tries everything to help the "seed" grow. He places it in sunlight and gives it water but nothing happens. Cookie Monster sees Abby who grants Cookie Monster a wish. Abby waves her magic wand and poof! A bunch of cookie trees begin to pop up! Abby's wand begins to spin out of control and cookie trees pop up around Hooper's store! But the cookies are too high for Cookie Monster and Elmo to reach. While Elmo helps Cookie Monster, Alan helps Abby think of a rhyme to poof the cookie trees away. Just as Elmo is about to reach for the cookie, the cookie trees disappear. Luckily, Maria and Luis give Cookie Monster a fresh baked apple cinnamon cookie made from apples they picked from their tree. Cookie Monster realizes that while chocolate chip cookies are delicious, fresh baked cinnamon apple cookies are just as yummy!

Mexico - One Plate at a Time with Rick Bayless: Taquisa for Ten

Taquisa for Ten

(#605Z) duration 26:46 CC STEREO TVG

From street stalls to bustling taquerias and morning to midnight, tacos are Mexico's favorite mini-meal-a few blissful bites of something thrillingly savory, wrapped in a soft, fragrant tortilla. And it turns out they're also a perfect party food. Rick and his daughter, Lanie, plan a backyard taquisa-a taco buffet centered around one of the greatest taco fillings of all, Michoacan-Style Pork Carnitas, chunks of pork, slowly simmered in oil until they're crisp and golden on the outside and succulent inside. Rick shows us how it's done in Mexico in giant copper cauldrons, and then brings that idea home with the help of a surprising, cooking device-a turkey fryer. For pre-party nibbles, he shows how to turn salad-bar veggies into Mexican "Crudite" Platter, with the addition of a little store-bought chicharrones (pork cracklings) and chamoy, a sweet-sour apricot hot sauce-flavors that go perfectly with his beer and hot sauce Micheladas. In the spirit of a true taquisa, Rick makes fresh corn tortillas on a hot griddle. To round out the buffet, there are black beans, Guacamole flavored with sun-dried tomatoes and salsa, and everyone tucks into their tacos at little tables set up around the yard, taqueria-style. The meal ends with another street-food favorite, homemade Fruit "Mojito" Ice Pops made with fresh lime juice, mint and berries.

Sin, Fire & Gold! The Days of San Francisco's Barbary Coast

duration 1:28:33 CC STEREO TVG

Since its beginnings, San Francisco has been home to an eclectic array of characters drawn not only to the city's spectacularly beautiful surroundings but also to the vibrant spirit of independence the area seems to foster. KQED's documentary celebrates the people, places and events which have shaped the city over the years. San Francisco can boast not only of physical beauty, but also a history replete with swashbuckling drama and Gold Rush fever. Largely forgotten, much of this history seems to have been buried with the rubble of the great 1906 earthquake. Host Greg Sherwood joins tour guide and historian Daniel Bacon in sifting through the present to uncover some of San Francisco's fascinating past.
Viewers join them for a leisurely walk along the city's original waterfront - the Barbary Coast - and discover the last remaining pocket of original buildings in the area which miraculously survived the 1906 earthquake and fire. The tour points out where Gold Rush ships still lie buried beneath the towering skyscrapers of the Financial District, and viewers learn why the Ferry building faces a particular sleepy side street as well as the logical main avenue of Market Street. At times, the tour takes viewers inside some of the buildings along the way to enjoy unique interior designs and significant architectural elements, including the Old Mint, a spectacular national landmark seldom seen by the general public. It also highlights some of the area's more colorful characters, such as famed Gold Rush era performer Lotta Crabtree.

Julia Child's Kitchen Wisdom

duration 1:20:16 CC STEREO TVG

Throughout the last half-century, chef Julia Child built a vast, deep and adoring following, especially among public television viewers. She was also a mentor and motivator to three generations of chefs; all have helped elevate the level of culinary arts in the US such that it is comparable to that of any other place in the world. And when not standing in front of TV cameras, Julia Child taught and traveled in excess of 100,000 miles a year - an itinerant cheerleader for the appreciation of both serious and fun cooking, fresh food and fine wine.

This special features culinary tips, techniques and insights from Julia and friends, all culled from her years as America's presenter and mentor of good things gastronomic. Materials from more than 125 programs make up this dollop of wit and wisdom, including Julia's first television show, The French Chef, broadcast before the existence of videotape (it's kinescoped) on February 11, 1963. Interwoven are outtakes and footage from some of Julia's broadcasts on other television venues, such as Good Morning America, The Rosie O'Donnell Show, Emeril Live and Martha Stewart. In addition, Wolfgang Puck, Alice Waters, Thomas Keller, Jeremiah Tower, Nancy Silverton, Jasper White, Sarah Moulton and other notables from the world of food share and reflect on what they learned from Julia or how she was an inspiration. The rarely-seen one-minute tips made in conjunction with her 1983 series, Julia and Company, are sprinkled throughout the program.

The Hot Wall

(#2003) duration 26:46 CC TVG

The cabinetry surrounding the built-in double oven, range and range hood is the first section Norms builds, using some of the techniques explained in the first two episodes. Norm shows the location of the dream kitchen, on the footprint of an existing version built by its owner 30 years earlier. Improvements in materials and techniques not available in the 1970s will mean stronger cabinets that are easier to use and maintain, look attractive over a prolonged lifetime and add considerable value to the home. Best of all, the new kitchen can be built for a fraction of the cost of a kitchen built by "professionals. " After showing how to build the carcass for the oven cabinet, Norm adds a storage organizer for trays and cookie sheets and a large drawer below for pot lids; he plans two small base cabinets on either side of the range and two wall hung units to complete the group. Next, he shows off the details of the prototype inset door and drawer design, which will be used extensively in this kitchen. At the end of the episode, he builds a dovetailed drawer box with a plain front. This drawer design will also be used throughout the dream kitchen.

UltraMind Solution: Defeat Depression, Overcome Anxiety and Sharpen Your Mind with Mark Hyman, M.D.

duration 58:29 CC STEREO TVG

Is it possible to cure depression, recover from autism, reverse dementia - without the use of drugs or psychotherapy? In a radical departure from the classic therapies, Dr. Mark Hyman shares a revolutionary new method for treating this invisible epidemic of "broken brains" that affect 1 out of every 4 of us.
Based on the emerging field of functional medicine, the cure for brain disorders is outside the brain, in other parts of our bodies, a concept that modern medicine has mostly ignored. Yet the conclusion from science is irrefutable: by healing our bodies, we will heal our brains automatically. Dr. Hyman reveals that by treating the 7 key imbalances in our biology, we allow our body's natural healing intelligence to take over and automatically heal our brains, leading to an UltraMind - one that's alert, sharp, focused, happy, energetic and relaxed.
