    Burt Bacharach's Best (My Music Presents) Thi archival PBS special includes all the original artists with rare archival footage and clips from the 1960s-1970s. For over half-a-century, the immensely popular and immediately identifiable melodies of celebrated composer Burt Bacharach have touched millions of music lovers all over the world.
    Bacharach teamed with lyricist Hal David for a stunning run of classic songs, many in tandem with songstress Dionne Warwick ("Walk On By," "Anyone Who Had A Heart," "I Say A Little Prayer," "I'll Never Fall In Love Again"). British born Dusty Springfield enjoyed Bacharach hits with the wistful "Wishin' & Hopin'" and seductive "The Look Of Love" while Tom Jones popularized the playful "What's New Pussycat?" The smashes continued in the 1970s when The Carpenters reached #1 with "(They Long To Be) Close To You," following another chart-topper, "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head," the Oscar-winning tune sung by B.J. Mitchell and a very small group of bankers, brokers, and speculators manipulated the stock market, grew wealthy, and helped create the economic boom of the Twenties. This film chronicles the year the boom went bust through the words and experiences of the descendants of these titans of finance. While the market was rising, presidents and economists confidently predicted America would soon enter a time when there would be no more poverty, no more depressions-a "New Era" when everyone could be rich. Instead, it was the rich who became richer.     Prohibition [#102H] A Nation of Scofflaws In 1920, Prohibition goes into effect, making it illegal to manufacture, transport or sell intoxicating liquor. This episode examines the problems of enforcement, as millions of law-abiding Americans become lawbreakers overnight. While a significant portion of the country is willing to adapt to the new law, others are shocked at how inconsistent the Volstead Act actually is. As weaknesses in the law and its enforcement become clear, millions find ways to exploit it. Drys had hoped Prohibition would make the country a safer place, but the law has many victims. Honest policemen are killed on the job, unlucky drinkers are poisoned by adulterated liquor and overzealous federal agents violate civil rights just to make a bust. Alcoholism still exists, and may even be increasing, as women begin to drink in the speakeasies that replace the male-only saloon. Despite the growing discontent with Prohibition and its consequences, few politicians dare to speak out against the law, fearful of its powerful protector, the Anti-Saloon League.     1962 World's Fair: When Seattle Invented The Future The 1962 World's Fair, a 6-month celebration of science and technology, featured an exciting mix of culture, cuisine and celebrity, drawing more than 10 million visitors from around the world to the then relatively unknown mill town of Seattle. Through historical photographs and archival footage, this program brings to life the textures and sounds of Seattle in the late 1950s and early '60s.
    The city's business, civic and cultural leaders, historians and longtime residents reminisce about the excitement and ambition the Fair ignited. Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen credits seeing the 605-foot Space Needle, Monorail, "Bubbleator" and other exhibits for inspiring his love of technology and science. Public television's own Rick Steves shares his vivid memory of seeing "exotic" Belgian Waffles for the first time at The Food Circus. The Fair also offered an eclectic mix of high art and low culture, from opera concerts and paintings by Roy Lichtenstein and Jasper Johns, to Gracie Hanson's racy Vegas-style nightclub revue and an adult puppet show. The documentary includes rare footage captured at the fair, including appearances by Space Age hero John Glenn; politicians Adlai Stevenson, Richard Nixon, Lyndon Johnson, Robert Kennedy and Hubert H. Humphrey; journalist Edward R. Murrow; the Duke of Edinburgh; and beloved performers Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, Peggy Lee, Lawrence Welk, the Lennon Sisters, Bob Hope, Miles Davis and Elvis.
