  Located 50 miles east of Redding, Lassen Volcanic National Park was established in 1916 because of its significance as an active volcanic landscape. Lassen Peak began erupting in 1914 with a huge blast following in 1915, which sent a mushroom cloud seven miles into the stratosphere. Before the 1980 eruption of Mount Saint Helens in Washington, Lassen Peak was the most recent volcanic outburst in the continuous 48 states.
