    History Detectives [#705]
    * Tokyo Rose Recording - A viewer has a recording he thinks holds evidence used in the World War II treason trial of Iva Tugori, aka Tokyo Rose. Toguri was an American citizen who hosted a Japanese propaganda radio show broadcast to U.S. troops serving in the Pacific. These broadcasts were at the center of what was then the costliest trial in U.S. history. The viewer has never been able to play his oversized record, but family lore says it reveals the role his uncle played in this infamous show trial. Gwendolyn Wright consults with experts from Long Island to Los Angeles. Her answer flips assumptions of guilt and innocence, and gives viewers a fresh angle on what actually happened in and around that trial.
    * Crazy Horse Photo - 25 years ago, someone gave a leather purse to a Lakota businessman. Inside the purse he found a photograph and a note, dated 1904, written in the Lakota language. An elderly man from the Lakota community translated the note. In brief, it says, "This is a photograph of Crazy Horse." Does the contributor have the Holy Grail of the Wild West: a photo of the Lakota warrior who defeated General Custer? Historians are suspicious of most photos purported to be of Crazy Horse. The Lakota leader avoided cameras, believing they would rob his soul. To verify the photo, Elyse Luray tracks down a Crazy Horse descendant and visits the Crazy Horse Memorial. Finally, she puts the photo in context with other works by the same photographer at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC.
    * WWII DIARY (Encore presentation) - A man in Lexington, North Carolina, has a poignant diary written by a World War II pilot. He inherited the diary 20 years ago from his father, who said it once belonged to a close friend whom he fought alongside in WWII, until the war took his friend's life in 1944. Keeping the last thoughts of this fallen solider is now too great a burden for the contributor. Can HD return it to a living relative? The stakes are raised as the diary pages reveal the story of a young American pilot stationed in England, racing against time and all odds to return home before the birth of his first child. Wes Cowan heads to Florida on a quest to reunite the diary with the pilot's surviving family.

    Savage Planet [#103]
    Deadly Skies
Man has always looked to the sky with unease, for out of the blue comes hail that can destroy homes and cars in a moment, and lightning - hotter than the surface of the sun and powerful enough to light a city for a day. At Cape Canaveral, lightning can stop the U.S. space program in its tracks. Survivors in Australia and Britain tell of lightning's extraordinary power - how it can shred a glider to confetti and knock more than 20 golfers to the ground with a single strike. Spectacular footage from America's lightning capital, where Dr. Martin Uman triggers lightning intentionally, and fascinating research by Dr. Chris Andrew on how a bolt affects the human body shows how little we understand. But there are other deadlier threats from the skies. Out in the blackness of space are meteorites - pieces of planets and stars. Things of beauty and fascination to passionate collectors like Tucson's Bob Haag and astronomer David Kring, hundreds of fragments fall harmlessly to Earth every day. But out there, silently circling, are a least 1,500 big enough to wipe out a city. Some - as comet-hunters David Levy and Carolyn Shoemaker show - big enough to end life on Earth. duration 56:24   CC STEREO TVG

    Savage Planet [#104]
    Extremes
This is a story of two contrasting worlds: the highest mountains in the depths of winter and Death Valley, the hottest, driest, lowest place in North America where July temperatures stay over 100 degrees - day and night. In these harsh environments, a wrong move can mean death. In the mountains of America and Europe people enter territory that is truly nature's own. In winter, avalanches come screaming down slopes at up to 125 miles an hour. Dramatic stories from Utah demonstrate what happens to their victims. In France in 1999, 12 villagers died despite living in a place avalanche scientists and planners had thought was safe. In the baking heat of America's Death Valley, park rangers constantly patrol in military vehicles and light planes, on the lookout for stranded visitors. Yet the very extremes of this place draw people here - enthusiasts who see the heat as a challenge and engineers for whom it is a natural laboratory, a place where man and machine can be pushed to their limits. duration 56:12   CC STEREO TVG

    Frontline [#2805]
    A Death In Tehran
At the height of the protests following Iran's controversial presidential election this summer, a young woman named Neda Soltani was shot and killed on the streets of Tehran. Her death - filmed on a cameraphone, then uploaded to the web - quickly became an international outrage, and Soltani became the face of a powerful movement that threatened the hardline government's hold on power. With the help of a unique network of correspondents in and out of the country, Frontline investigates the life and death of the woman whose image remains a potent symbol for those who want to keep the reform movement alive. The film also explores a number of unanswered questions in the aftermath of the greatest upheaval in Iran since the 1979 revolution: How many were arrested and killed as the security forces attempted to contain the growing protest movement? To what extent was the presidential vote manipulated? What is the nature of the reported divisions among Iran's ruling elites? duration 56:46   STEREO DVI TVRE
