Nova [#3710H] Mt. St. Helens Back from the Dead When Mount St. Helens erupted in 1980, every living thing in the blast zone was buried beneath 300 feet of avalanche debris, covered with steaming mud and, finally, topped with a superheated layer of frothy rock from deep within the earth. It seemed as though Mount St. Helens might remain a wasteland forever. When biologist Charlie Crisafulli first flew over the disaster zone, finding no sign of life, little did he realize that his own life would be forever changed. Crisafulli has remained at the site for 27 years, documenting the dramatic return of plant and animal life to the barren landscape and pioneering a new understanding of the interaction between geologic forces and the life surrounding the mountain. Nova brings viewers on a journey of a landscape brought back from the dead. duration 55:01   STEREO TVPG (Secondary audio: DVI)

Nova [#3807H] Crash of Flight 447 On June 1st, 2009, Flight AF447, an Air France Airbus A330 flying from Rio de Janeiro to Paris, disappeared over the Atlantic Ocean with the loss of all 228 lives. How could a state-of-the-art airliner with elaborate electronic safety and navigation features and a faultless safety record simply vanish without trace? NOVA assembles a team of seasoned pilots, engineers and safety experts to examine the evidence that emerged in the weeks following this horrific disaster. What led Flight 447's crew to fly straight into a towering thunderstorm? With expert testimony, satellite weather images, and messages transmitted by the doomed plane's computer system, NOVA pieces together the fatal chain of events. At the climax of the show, NOVA takes an experienced crew into the cockpit of an Airbus simulator and reconstructs the sudden emergency that confronted Flight 447's pilots. This unique forensic approach to the mystery leads to chilling new insights on the challenges that the pilots faced on that stormy June night, and raises troubling questions about the increasing role of automation in today's state-of-the-art airliners. duration 54:56   STEREO TVPG (Secondary audio: DVI)

Final Hours: Amelia Earhart's Last Flight This powerful documentary recreates the final flight of Amelia Earhart, the noted aviation pioneer whose historic 1937 trip around the world ended in her tragic disappearance. Shot in 19 countries, it is based on "World Flight 1997," Texas aviator Linda Finch's honorary recreation of Earhart's planned flight. With the rare accreditation of the Smithsonian Institution, this informative program presents footage of Finch's flight, artfully intercut with archival footage and interviews with Earhart. Notably different from other Amelia Earhart films, this program also presents theories as to what actually occurred during the deadly flight. Produced by David Kennard and Reid Dennis. duration 56:50   STEREO TVG

Pacific Heartbeat [#102H] Under A Jarvis Moon Under a Jarvis Moon is the story of 130 young men from Hawai'i who, from the late 1930s through the early years of World War II, were part of a clandestine mission by the U.S. federal government to occupy desert islands in the middle of the Pacific. The first wave of these colonists were Hawaiian high school students, chosen because government officials assumed Pacific Islanders could best survive the harsh conditions present on the tiny, isolated islands. For the young men, who were unaware of the true purpose of their role as colonists, what ensued is a tale of intrigue, courage, and ultimately, tragedy. Amazingly, these men (four of whom are still alive) are only now being recognized for their sacrifice, and efforts are underway for the United States to officially acknowledge them for serving their country. duration 56:46   STEREO TVG (Secondary audio: DVI)
