    Washington Week [#4920]
    * This will be a working weekend for the Senate as lawmakers hope to begin debate on a sweeping $849 billion plan to overhaul the nation's health care system. The legislation would require most people to have health insurance but would allow states to opt out of a proposed government-run insurance plan. It will be an arduous struggle to get the 2074-page bill passed for a number of reasons, not all of which are political. Karen Tumulty of Time Magazine will explain why plus how the controversy this week over when women should get mammograms could have an impact on the healthcare debate.
    * President Obama said one of the primary goals of his trip to 4 Asian nations was to try and usher in "a new era of engagement with the world based on mutual interests and mutual respect." But during his final stop at a US military base in South Korea, he took a decidedly sharper tone when he urged the leaders of North Korea and Iran to take "serious steps" to abandon their nuclear weapons programs. Critics say he returns to the White House with little to show from his 7-day trip. David Sanger of The New York Times will take a closer look at whether President Obama made progress on a number of issues including censorship, human rights and climate change.
    * Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made an unannounced visit to Afghanistan this week and came away saying she was pleased with Afghan President Hamid Karzai's pledge to cleanup corruption within his government. In addition to attending Karzai's second inauguration, Clinton met with General Stanley McChrystal who is awaiting a decision from President Obama about his request for 40,000 more troops. Doyle McManus of the Los Angeles Times will report on how an exit strategy and Karzai's ability to tackle corruption and train Afghan people to takeover security forces over the next few years are weighing on President Obama as he contemplates the best way forward in Afghanistan.
    * Even before Sarah Palin's memoir hit shelves this week, it soared to the bestseller list. The former Alaska governor has become a Republican rock star doing TV interviews and attracting thousands of fans to her book signings. But many, including some conservatives, continue to harbor doubts about her political future and how formidable a candidate she may be should she run for president in 2012. John Dickerson of Slate Magazine will examine the message Palin delivers in her book and what career options she may be considering.

    Secret Family of Jesus
Professor Robert Beckford investigates the "conspiracy" that author Dan Brown missed in The Da Vinci Code. The program traces back to the beginnings of Christianity and uncovers a conspiracy that challenges the religion's foundations. It's the story of the people closest to Jesus: those who shared his bloodline. Jesus' real human family -brothers, sisters, cousins, uncles and nephews - was a powerful force in shaping the early and vital Christian story, and his bloodline survived for at least 300 years after Jesus' death. The Church effectively airbrushed Jesus' family out of history - even excising them from the Bible. At the film's climax, Dr. Beckford visits Rome to confront today's Vatican experts with his findings concerning Jesus' family. Even after 2000 years, the Church still finds it difficult to accept the importance and strategic significance of Jesus' family. duration 51:56   CC STEREO TVPG

Through President Lyndon Johnson's taped phone conversations and his own remembrances, Moyers looks at Johnson's deliberations as he stepped up America's role in Vietnam. duration 56:46   CC STEREO

    Now on PBS [#547Z]
The Pentagon estimates that as many as 1 in 5 American soldiers are coming home from war zones with traumatic brain injuries, many of which require round-the-clock attention. But lost in the reports of these returning soldiers are the stories of family members who often sacrifice everything to care for them. NOW reveals how little has been done to help these family caregivers, and reports on dedicated efforts to support them. duration 26:46   STEREO TVRE

    * Mosaic artist Laurel True - True transforms the humblest of surfaces with her brilliantly colored designs. She has been creating mosaics for twelve years, and her works can now be found on buildings and installations throughout the US. Great Scenic Railway Journeys Celebrating: North America's Steam Railways [#101?]
From the frozen tundra of Alaska to the vast high desert of Arizona, the rolling hills of New Hampshire to the Black Hills of South Dakota and the prairies of Canada, railroads helped build North America into the industrial power of the world. Come with us as we take you on a journey unsurpassed in its scenic beauty. This program will visit 17 of North America's most historic and scenic tourist steam railroads. It is a journey steeped in the history of a great land where steam trains provided raw power to blaze new trails and build the US and Canada. GSRJ is proud to chronicle the efforts to preserve and restore the relics of the era of steam. The payoff is that a part of our past continues as living history and comes alive for viewers of this epic steam journey. This program will present the history and the beauty of the land and share in the excitement of those who cherish and preserve the remaining North American tourist steam railroads. Grammy award-winning musician and storyteller David Holt hosts. Step with him back in time for the story of when steam power muscled its way though the steep, rugged terrain of the Alleghenies, the Rockies, the Sierras and onto the Great Plains and into the desert southwest. duration 1:58:57   CC STEREO TVG

Brain Fitness 2: Sight and Sound
This program is designed to help people get the most from their senses as they age. It looks at the two important senses of vision and hearing, how they change throughout life, and what we can do to keep them healthy and fully functional.
We know that we begin to experience decline in most cognitive functions in our 30s and 40s. As we grow older, the rate of decline increases, and the cumulative effects become more noticeable. We have increasing difficulty remembering, paying close attention, responding rapidly, performing complex tasks and our coordination and movement and many other cognitive functions that once came easily are now more difficult. But what we notice most is the difficulty hearing in a noisy place or seeing when we look at someone placed in front of a bright light, and we find that our reading slows.
These are symptoms of elemental physical changes in the aging brain. The problem is more than just lapses in memory. This program is based on neuro-plasticity - the ability of the brain to change and adapt -- even rewire itself! It studies how we see and how that changes through life. Host: Dr. Michael Merzenich.
