    Nova [#3614]
    Becoming Human: Birth of Humanity
In gripping forensic detail, the second program investigates the first skeleton that really looks like us - "Turkana Boy" - an astonishingly complete specimen of Homo erectus found by the famous Leakey team in Kenya. These ancestors are thought to have developed key innovations such as hunting, use of fire and extensive social bonds. Nova examines a theory that it was long-distance running - our ability to jog - that was not only crucial for the survival of these early hominids on grasslands filled with vicious predators, but also gave them a unique hunting strategy: chasing and running down prey, such as deer or antelope, to the point of exhaustion. "Turkana Boy" also marks the first time in human evolution that there is strong evidence of an extended period of childhood and parenting. As anthropologist and primatologist Sarah Hardy explains, "Because they had longer childhoods, there was a wonderful opportunity for big brains to evolve." New analyses of fossil bones and teeth are giving us direct evidence of how, why and when humans' uniquely long childhood and parenting began and how the empathy of the family bond got started and why it proved vital. duration 56:31   STEREO DVI TVPG

Kitka, May, Arts and the Economy
    * For 30 years, the all-female vocal group Kitka has performed music rooted in Eastern European musical traditions. Spark joins Kitka as they rehearse and perform a new performance based on the songs and stories that were passed down to them.
    * Next, the mixed-media work of Santa Cruz artist Victoria May is inspired by the intricate process of custom dress-making. A former seamstress by trade, May now makes sculptural textile pieces that blend traditional hand sewing techniques with evocative and unexpected materials.
    * Then, in a special collaboration with PBS' The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, we investigate how the current economy is affecting artists in the Bay Area. How are they coping with the economic downturn? Some scholars and activists think hope lies in government support. What can we learn from the historic WPA programs that provided employment for 8.5 Million Americans during the 1930's?
