Truly CA: Our State, Our Stories [#303]
    Pikyav
For centuries the Karuk fished, gathered food, and made medicine in the fertile watershed of the Klamath River. Contact with European Americans and their zeal for resource extraction nearly eliminated California native peoples, leaving only a handful of Karuk families on their land. Despite efforts to suppress them, Karuk traditions were carefully passed from one generation to the next. Today these traditions are hampered by governmental policies that rarely take into consideration the native view, or their historical role as land managers. As the Karuk people slowly return, the struggle to reclaim the physical and cultural landscape becomes their greatest challenge - to heal the land as well as the people who call it their home. Pikyav is Andrew Chambers' fifth film collaboration with the Karuk. By Andrew Chambers. duration 57:28   CC STEREO TVG

Dean Martin - The One & Only
He was a beloved American icon - the coolest, the most debonair, the smoothest entertainer of the 1960s and 70s. This special is a loving and moving tribute to one of the most admired and multi-talented performers the world has ever known. While one of America's top vocalists, Dino was also an accomplished, serious film actor, appearing in The Young Lions, Toys In The Attic, Some Came Running, Rio Bravo, and many others. And with his Martin & Lewis comedy background, he was also adept at light comedy in films like Ocean's Eleven, What A Way To Go, and Ten Thousand Bedrooms. At the same time, Dean's NBC variety hour, The Dean Martin Show, ran for 9 highly-rated years and spawned his equally well-watched Celebrity Roast specials.
The program takes us through his entire life and career, from growing up in Steubenville, Ohio (where he was born Dino Paul Crochetti) through his early days as first a boxer, and then a handsome young crooner, then his teaming with comedian Jerry Lewis in movies, television, and on stage. The breakup of Martin & Lewis was followed by Dean's growth as a huge record seller and movie star, followed by his teaming with Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop in the legendary Rat Pack of movies and the Las Vegas stage. The film features performance clips from Martin & Lewis' comedy career, and we also see their live television reunion, after many years of not speaking to each other. Interview segments include Dean himself, Jerry Lewis, Dean's wife Jeannie and daughter Deana, his producer Greg Garrison, and William Schoell, his biographer.

    Nature [#2703]
    Black Mamba
The black mamba is one of Africa's most dangerous and feared snakes, known for being very aggressive when disturbed. Rearing up with its head four feet above the ground, it strikes with deadly precision, delivering venom that is packed with three different kinds of toxins and is ten times more deadly than needed to kill an adult human. Without treatment the mortality rate is 100%, the highest among all venomous snakes in the world. Until now, little has been known about the black mamba's natural behavior in the wild because in Africa most people kill a black mamba on sight and feel lucky to have done so. But in the tiny country of Swaziland in southern Africa, a team of herpetologists has an entirely different "take" on these creatures and hopes their six-week study will change public perception of what they feel is the world's most misunderstood snake. duration 54:46   CC STEREO DVI TVPG
