    Washington Week [#4918]
    * President Barack Obama's push to overhaul health care will take him to Capitol Hill tomorrow where he will have a "House call" with Democratic lawmakers. On Saturday, the House is expected to vote on a sweeping $1.2 trillion bill that would extend coverage to millions of uninsured and prohibit insurance companies from denying coverage. AARP and American Medical Association (AMA) have endorsed the House bill, but strong opposition from Republicans and some conservative Democrats persists. Ceci Connolly of The Washington Post will explain where there may be room for compromise and how abortion, immigration, and a so-called "millionaire tax" are factoring into the debate.
*This week Democrats lost two key gubernatorial races in New Jersey and Virginia while picking up a historically Republican congressional seat in New York. Democrats insist the results were more about local issues; Republicans argue the Democratic defeats signal voters' dissatisfaction with the Obama presidency. We go beyond the partisan "spin" to get analysis from James Barnes of National Journal and John Harris of Politico on what the results really reveal about incumbents, independent voters, and Americans concerns about the economy and jobs as well as the impact on President Obama's standing and political capital just one year after he was elected.
    * The flawed Afghan presidential election that began in August finally concluded this week with Hamid Karzai being declared the winner after his challenger withdrew from the run-off election. Now the question is how will the re-election of President Karzai and ongoing concern about corruption within his government factor into the Obama administration's decision about US engagement in Afghanistan? Martha Raddatz of ABC News will report on how Karzai's victory and the recent surge in violence may change the US mission in the region.

Mexico - One Plate at a Time with Rick Bayless [#708H]
    The Case for Quesadillas
What could be better than a freshly made, gooey, warm quesadilla? Rick answers the question by showing us how to make the flour tortillas from scratch. What could be better than that? Well, actually, in Mexico, Rick explains, quesadillas and flour tortillas have nothing to do with each other. He takes us to the Bazar Sabado, a charming colonial-style labyrinth of handicrafts shops in the heart of Mexico City's bohemian Coyoacan district, to experience the true art of the quesadilla. In the Bazar's shady courtyard, the delicate treats are made the traditional way from freshly ground corn masa, patted onto a massive cast-iron griddle, topped with cheese and fillings and baked to a golden finish. For a more rough-and-tumble look at the same idea, we visit Lagunilla, the city's fantastical flea-market, where vendors turn out all kinds of mouthwatering quesadillas and other toasted-masa snacks on a griddle over a charcoal fire. Then it's on to Paxia, a stunning fine-dining restaurant, where Rick shows us one more style of quesadilla, a cheese-filled pocket of masa that's deep-fried to make a golden turnover. At Paxia, they serve a miniature version of these as an amuse bouche. Across town at La Merced market, Rick checks out the classic cheeses for quesadilla-making, and picks up some requeson, the Mexican version of ricotta. It's a fresh cheese and fresh cheeses are easy to prepare as Rick shows us by making Mexican Fresh Cheese in his Chicago kitchen. Then, he turns it into Luxurious Rustic Griddle-Baked Quesadillas for a romantic date-night dinner with his wife, Deann. duration 26:46   STEREO TVG

We visit the Fonterutoli estate where they produce both wine and olive oil, and where Eric gets an up-close look at the process of making olive oil -which is not dissimilar to the process of making wine. Martha's Candlestand
To see Martha Washington's bedroom, you'll have to talk to the Ladies of Mount Vernon, who look after the first president's mansion near the Potomac River. Although not officially on the tour of Mount Vernon, the ladies agree to take Norm to parts of the old house that the public rarely sees. In one such room, the third floor bedroom that Martha took after George died, Norm comes across a handsome cherry candlestand that sits near the bed. Upon further inspection, he discovers that it is a diminutive, well-crafted stand complete with a wooden "birdcage" element that allows the tabletop to rotate and flip up for storage. Before he leaves Mount Vernon, Norm works with a sawyer of historic wood, William Jewell, to attain some cherry (what else?) harvested from one of the estate's fallen trees. duration 26:46   CC TVG

    This Old House [#2903H]
Newton Centre Project, Part 3 of 16
Host Kevin O'Connor and general contractor Tom Silva discuss the homeowners' decision to stay in the house during construction, and they agree it won't be easy. Homeowners Bill and Gillian Pierce are already living out of boxes and coolers, because today their kitchen will be gutted back to the studs. In the basement, the laundry room can stay for the time being, but the entire heating system is also coming out, as plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey goes straight to work with a reciprocating saw and a sledgehammer. Outside, Tom shows Kevin how he's extending the old windowsills with wood and epoxy to replicate the historic "ears" of the sill that were cut off by the vinyl siding contractor years ago. Gillian sets up a temporary kitchen in the basement, while Kevin gets some bad news from master electrician Allen Gallant. The exterior service components are water-damaged beyond repair; due to some hidden (and ungrounded) knob-and-tube wiring, nearly 90 percent of the old house will have to be rewired to meet building code. Out back, Tom uses interlocking, insulated concrete forms for the foundation of the new addition, just before the concrete truck arrives for the pour. duration 26:46   STEREO TVG
