In 1999 KQED launched its Independent Initiative. The Initiative is the concrete expression of KQED's commitment to help bring independent work to public television, and to collaborate with the local independent film and video community. The Initiative is a response to the demand of the public for new film, to the needs of local producers of independent films and to KQED's commitment to provide exciting, compelling programming.
To help guide and participate in this effort, KQED created the Independent Advisory Panel, made up of local filmmakers and media arts organizations. The Panel has had a tremendous impact on KQED's efforts to support independent film, and continues to work with KQED to pursue and foster further collaboration. Since its inception the Independent Initiative has:
Increased the number of independent works on KQED. We now carry more independent programs than any other public television station in the country.
