Going into the 9th year of the Sunnyvale Farmers' Market, Murphy Avenue of Downtown Sunnyvale has transformed from a dark, sleepy (and somewhat seedy) area into a lively, vibrant place to be. Now in addition to the Farmers' Market, the street has developed into a cultural culinary experience through a wide variety of excellent restaurants, pubs, nightclubs, and specialty retailers. Murphy Avenue has kept the feeling and charm of an old downtown due to the presence of independent "mom & pop" retailers, there are no National chains.
The older architecture of the buildings and a tree lined street has made a nice backdrop to what has become an institution and a great social meeting place for the community. Many groups meet early in the morning at the outdoor tables of one of the three local coffee houses, all great spots for people-watching, listening to the fine local musicians in the market, and getting a jump start for this Saturday morning ritual. Many others enjoy the fresh fruit, pastries, or made-to-order crepes from the farmers' market, while shopping for their produce, specialty baked goods, and handmade crafts.
With over 50 vendors displaying, sampling, and offering their freshest seasonal fruits and vegetables, there's something for everyone. From handmade tortillas, breads, Indian and vegan delicacies, fresh fish, sausage, olive oils & vinegars, kettle corn, flowers, orchids, to a variety of baked goods, including homemade organic pet snacks.
Going into the 4th season of the Sunnyvale Downtown Association sponsored "Music & Market" the summer concert series has brought spirited life to Murphy Avenue on Wednesday evenings from 5:00 to 8:30, throughout July & August.
Great bands, food, beer, wine and an abbreviated version of Saturday's Farmers' Market is enjoyed by thousands of South Bay residents.
