The Alemany Farmers' Market is the oldest farmers' market in the Bay Area. It was started by John Brucato in the 1940s. It offers some of the lowest farmers' market prices in the Bay Area as well as specialty items specific to Asian cuisine.

This market is similar to the Friday downtown Old Oakland market which resides next to Chinatown. Alemany however, does not have as wide a variety of prepared foods and if you are looking for organic produce you will need to ask the vendors about their growing methods. There seemed to be fewer certified organic vendors at this market but the certification process is quite expensive.

Some of the unique qualities of this market are: you can purchase live chickens and a variety of eggs (duck, quail), there is a substantial fresh fish market with live shellfish, an abundance of vegetables and fresh herbs specific to Asian cooking, orchids and other fresh flowers are available, and you can purchase fresh nuts and beans. The diversity of people at the Alemany market truly reflects the many cultures that reside here in the Bay Area.
