In 1981, Willie Walker moved to San Francisco from Fort Worth, Texas. He was nurse at R.K. Davies Medical Center and the AIDS Ward in San Francisco General Hospital. During his free time, Walker pursued his interest in community history and was invited to join the Lesbian and Gay History Project in 1982. With the help of local community historians, Walker began to conceptualize and share his idea about establishing an archive for gay and lesbians in San Francisco. In 1985, Walker, along with Greg Pennington and Eric Garber, founded what eventually became the GLBT Historical Society. Today, the GLBT Historical Society collects and preserves historical, cultural and artistic materials related to the gay lesbian bisexual transgender community. He now serves as Archivist Emeritus.
