2003 Latino Heritage Local Heroes:
Dr. Jonathan Lorenzo Yorba

Dr. Jonathan Lorenzo Yorba
Yerba Buena Center for the Arts

Jonathan Yorba is a member of the executive staff at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts -- a gathering place for artists and communities; a multidisciplinary "idea house" where artists are nurtured, supported, exhibited and presented; and a place where contemporary art thrives. As Director of Education & Community Programs, he oversees a team of 80.

Jonathan has traveled on behalf of YBCA to Cuba, Spain, Portugal, Korea, China and Thailand for multidisciplinary arts program research and funding. And in 2002, one of his department’s programs (Young Artists at Work) received an award from the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities.

Before joining YBCA, Jonathan was the Curator of Education at the Crocker Art Museum, a Curatorial Fellow at the Smithsonian Institution, and the Interim Curator and Acting Director of The Mexican Museum.

Since 1993 he has been Adjunct Professor of Museum Studies at John F. Kennedy University, and has published Arte Latino: Treasures from the Smithsonian American Art Museum. This year he completed Leadership San Francisco, a course which develops community leaders who are both knowledgeable about the city and concerned with its well being. Recently, Mayor Willie Brown appointed Jonathan to the 49-member Workforce Investment San Francisco Board, which oversees the work of the Private Industry Council. Jonathan also represents the community at the national level as Chair of the Latino Professional Committee of the American Association of Museums. This October, Dr. Yorba will co-chair the Ford Foundation Conference of Fellows in Puerto Rico.
