Virgie Newman
Volunteer Program Director -- Reachout for the Rainbow Afterschool Program
San Francisco, CA
Virgie Newman
Virgie Newman is the founder and volunteer program director for the Reachout for the Rainbow Afterschool Program, a faith-based, family-focused program dedicated to improving children's academic skills and providing family-centered activities in Bayview Hunters Point.

Since 1990, Newman has provided hundreds of young people with academic assistance, job market preparation and self esteem development, while also working full-time at San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center and, later, for the Juvenile Probation Department in San Francisco. Fifteen years after Reachout's inception, more than 200 students have benefited annually from the program's activities, including school-year tutoring, an annual science festival and a three-week summer program.

Newman also serves as an African American Health Initiative Critical Mass Health Conductor, a board member for the Rainbow 7th Day Adventist Church & Better Living Training Institute, and a trainer for the California School Age Consortium (CalSAC). She is the recipient of a CalSAC award and a Pacific Union Better Living Training Institute award for her contributions to the community.
