Glenn W. Holsclaw
Executive Director - Making Waves Education Program
Richmond, CA
Glenn W. Holsclaw is an educational visionary whose leadership of the Richmond-based Making Waves Education Program -- an after-school program for children in underserved communities -- has resulted in a more than tenfold increase in student enrollment and an expansion of the program to San Francisco.
Holsclaw, who became MWEP's executive director in 1994, buttressed the program's curriculum by strengthening the lesson structure and providing testing programs, student counseling and educational workshops. In 1994, the program served 40 students. Today, the program serves more than 500 students year round. Each year, 72 percent of the MWEP students enter four-year colleges and universities and an additional 10-15 percent of students attend community college.
Holsclaw taught in the Ethnic Studies Department at San Francisco State University prior to running the MWEP. He has also served on numerous school and community boards, including Branson High School, The Hamlin School, Leadership High School, The Breakthrough Collaborative and the Bay Area Discovery Museum.
