Daniel A. Collins, DDS, was one of the first African-American dentists in the Bay Area. He practiced dentistry in San Francisco for 33 years, between 1943 and 1976. During that time, he also taught at the College of Dentistry at the University of California San Francisco. He founded the San Francisco Bay Area Urban League and has served with numerous other civic organizations, including the local branch of the NAACP, Youth for Service and the United Bay Area Crusade. Dr. Collins has served on the California State Board of Health and on the California State Board of Education. On the federal level, he has served with the National Health Resources Advisory Committee, the U.S. Office of Education and as a consultant to the Surgeon General to the Army. He has also been a delegate to the Democratic National Convention.
Dr. Collins has published in many medical journals over the years, and he has been involved in the publication of several books, including two text book series His many honors include the National Urban League’s Whitney M. Young Jr. Award, which he received in 1990, and the San Francisco African-American Historical and Cultural Society's Praisesinger Award, which he received in 1993. He and his wife, DeReath, have four sons.
