Reverend Edgar Boyd and Maxwell Gillette
Affordable Housing Advocates, Bethel A.M.E. Church
Reverend Edgar Boyd, pastor of Bethel A.M.E. Church in San Francisco and Maxwell Gillette, a former college administrator and educator, have been vocal advocates for affordable housing through their work in their Western Addition Parish. They have been active for many years in both creating and preserving affordable housing for low- and middle-income residents in the Western Addition, a San Francisco neighborhood that has been seriously impacted by redevelopment and economic erosion. Boyd and Gillette worked together to create the Allen Community Development Corporation, which has purchased three cooperative apartment complexes totaling 250 units of affordable housing in the area. Their aim is to keep low- and middle-class families in San Francisco by giving them a stake in their homes and the community.
The two men are also active in the San Francisco Organizing Project, which was instrumental in placing a $250 million affordable housing bond measure on the ballot in 2002.
