2004 Local Heroes

Chui L. Tsang, Ph.D.
President, San Jose City College

Chui L. Tsang, Ph.D.
For almost 30 years, Dr. Tsang has helped create educational and employment opportunities for many Bay Area residents. After teaching at Stanford University from 1976 to 1980, he served as executive director of the Career Resources Development Center, a vocational training and employment agency. During his 10 years there, he worked with the unemployed and under-employed in the Tenderloin area of San Francisco and with refugees and immigrants from Asia and Latin America. In 1992, Dr. Tsang became dean of the School of Applied Science and Technology at City College of San Francisco, where he was responsible for 93 occupational programs and established the Evans Campus and the Bay Area's first teaching factory for advanced manufacturing. In 1997, Dr. Tsang was named president of San Jose City College, where he has led a $100 million campus renovation project and is making changes to ensure that the college is meeting the needs of changing student demographics and the significant Asian population. In 2002, he and his teammates won a gold Medal for soccer in the California Seniors Olympic Games.
