American Indian Heritage 2002 Local Heroes: Paul Owns the Sabre
Artist
Paul Owns the Sabre, Miniconjou Lakota, was born on the Cheyenne River Reservation in South Dakota in 1939. His natural artistic talent allows him to bring to the canvas the stories, dreams and songs of the Native Americans he has known. Mr. Owns the Sabre is also a long-distance walker and runner; in 1978, he participated in a walk across North America, from San Francisco to Washington, D.C., in order to stop eleven congressional bills that would affect all U.S. Indian tribes. He has taken part in nine other sacred long-distance runs and walks across the world in order to raise the concerns of indigenous peoples. Mr. Owns the Sabre has also been a counselor to community youth about the effects of drugs and alcohol.
