American Indian Heritage 2001 Local Heroes:
Deni Leonard

Deni Leonard
Founder and Chairman, United Native Depository Corporation
Deni Leonard is a member of the Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs Reservation of Oregon. He is a graduate of Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government, the University of Oregon, and San Bernardino Valley College of California. Mr. Leonard has taught at the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Washington at Seattle, University of Guam, and California State University at San Francisco. He has also lectured at over thirty universities around the world.

Mr. Leonard has over twenty-five years experience working with indigenous groups in Canada, the United States, Mexico, Ecuador, Hawaii, American Samoa, Western Samoa, Palau, Truk, Saipan, Yap, Tinian, New Zealand, and Australia. He has also consulted with over one hundred Tribal governments/groups from Canada and the United States.

Mr. Leonard has consulted with the U.S. Department of the Interior, the U.S. Department of Education, the National Institute of Education, three research and developmental laboratories, the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, and as advisor to the White House on Consumer Affairs. He also served as the Executive Director of the Oregon State Human Rights Commission. He is currently working on an international economic model which compares and contrasts indigenous governments throughout the world. Mr. Leonard has presented papers and lectures at over one hundred meetings, conferences, and educational institutes.
