American Indian Heritage 2002 Local Heroes: Sandra George
Medi-Cal Program, City & County of San Francisco
Sandra George, Washo/Paiute, has donated countless hours of volunteerism for the betterment of the Native-American community, especially the Two-Spirit community. During the 1969 Indian occupation of Alcatraz Island, Ms. George was instrumental in getting supplies to the demonstrators. She has volunteered her services with a number of community-based Native organizations, including Friendship House, the Native American Health Center and the Indian Center of All Nations. For the past twelve years, Ms. George has worked as a Medi-Cal Eligibility Worker for the city and county of San Francisco, focusing on the underserved communities living with HIV/AIDS.
