Cyberchase
Math rules in this animated adventure series which energizes kids ages 8 to 11 with math power. Full of cyber-mysteries with eye-popping animation and a sly comic flair, it features the voices of Christopher Lloyd and Gilbert Gottfried. The series sends the message that math is fun - it's about problem solving and, boy, does it come in handy. When the dastardly villain Hacker launches a mad mission to conquer the virtual universe, Motherboard calls upon 3 earth kids for help. They are Jackie, Matt and Inez - the culturally diverse heroes - who, along with the wise-cracking cyber-bird Digit, travel from their real-world realm to the colorful virtual vistas of cyberspace, where they vanquish the bad guys in an all-out battle of wits.

Fortress of Attitude
Hacker decides that he can force cybersites to surrender by annoying them big time. He broadcasts his loud and obnoxious voice across the vastness of cyberspace from a massive statue shaped like the arrogant Hacker himself. The kids and Digit are sent by Motherboard to the Northern Frontier, where they carry out a Mission Impossible style scheme to silence the statue and disable Hacker's intimidation. Using their skills at measuring length, the kids make their way up through the inside of the booby-trapped statue to Hacker's pointy chin and big mouth. But can they shut him up before Hacker shuts them down? The Big Idea: To measure length and communicate your results easily and precisely, identify a system of units based on a single standard length that everyone using it agrees on. Math Topic: Linear Measurement NCTM Links: Measurement.
And They Counted Happily Ever After
(topic: Number Sense) - Hacker kidnaps the King of this fractured fairytale world, and demands a ransom of golden eggs. The Wicked Witch then casts a spell, taking away everyone's ability to count and making it impossible for the fairy tale folk to gather the required large number of eggs. With the safety of the King at stake, the kids must help the fairy tale folk understand the role of place value in our number system before time runs out! The Big Idea: With numbers and a system, you have the power to keep track of anything and everything on earth.

A Battle of Equals
Hacker pollutes cyberspace with dangerous cyberstatic by tampering with four satellites designed to keep everything free from cyber- static cling. But is his plan only to trash cyberspace - or does he have something even more devious up his cloak? The kids learn the answer as they use balance scales and equations to restore the satellites and save Motherboard. The Big Idea: You can use an equation - a statement that two different expressions are equal to each other - to find unknown values that make the equation true. Math Topic: Balancing Equations NCTM Links: Algebra, Representation, Connections.

A Time to Cook
Hacker finds the part he needs to fix his Magnetic Magnotube - a machine that would disable Motherboard forever - in a most unlikely place. All he has to do to get it is win a cooking contest on the hit cyberspace TV show, The Fearless Chef. Hacker's plan? To kidnap his competition. But the Cybersquad is on to him. The girls go on a rescue mission to save the Fearless Chef, while Matt and Digit take on Hacker. Digit is already a celebrity chef, so this should be a piece of cake. They must race the clock and Hacker to cook three delicious dishes in three outrageous locations. Will Digit beat Hacker? Only time will tell. Math Topic: Elapsed Time; NCTM Links: Measurement.

A Day at the Spa
(topic: Combinations) - Hacker finds the Krystal of Kalmoor, the powerful orb that will give him eternal power. By possessing the Krystal, Hacker can roam cyberspace and create havoc without having to recharge his power. When the kids and Digit arrive to retrieve the Krystal, they are stymied by a series of switches, levers and buttons. Faced with the challenge of too many choices, the kids discover the value of lists, tables and, yes, tree diagrams! The Big Idea: Overwhelmed with choices? Lists, tables and tree diagrams help you master the combinations.

Less Than Zero
The Leaders of Cyberspace have gathered to discuss Hacker's increasing influence, when they are suddenly interrupted by Hacker. Buzz and Delete, Hacker's henchmen, hide the leaders including Dr. Marbles, in the building and its' up to the kids to rescue them. Before long, the kids discover that they can only move between the building's levels by scaling its outside walls! So the kids turn the building into a giant ruler in order to keep track of the floors. And when they discover that there are levels beneath what they thought was "zero," the kids must tap into the power of negative numbers. The Big Idea: Numbers don't have to stop at zero! Negative numbers -- numbers that are less than zero -- can extend the range of what you can measure on a scale and give you the ability to compare numbers using direction as well as amount. Math Topic: Negative Numbers NCTM Links: Number & Operations.

When Penguins Fly
Penguins can't fly - or can they? In Cyberspace, on one special night each year, the penguins of Penguia take flight to deliver gifts to young borgs across the virtual universe. For the first time ever, the CyberSquad's friend Fluff is participating, and invites his pals Matt, Jackie, Inez and Digit to join him in the impressive Penguin March. They head to the Ice Palace, where the gifts are made and where magic snowflakes are sprinkled on the penguins so they can fly. But Hacker, up to his usual ruinous tricks, doesn't want a happy holiday (let alone happy little borgs) so he creates a giant ditch in front of the Ice Palace and traps all the penguins in its icy depths! The CyberSquad must get the penguins ice-shoes so they can climb out before midnight, but how many do they need? With too many to count, the answer lies in the kids' ability to sample the penguin population to make a close estimate. Can the CyberSquad save the penguins and their favorite holiday too??

The dastardly Hacker (Christopher Lloyd) takes over the Radopolis cybersite, declaring himself King in "Totally Rad," the season premiere of CYBERCHASE. In an effort to dethrone him, the kids challenge the Hacker's extreme team to a winner-take-all skate-off. There's just one catch: high-scoring tricks need as much area as possible and the field keeps mysteriously changing! With Digit ( Gilbert Gottfried) as coach, the kids put on a dazzling display of blading, boarding, and biking, but can they match their performance to the changing arena? The Big Idea: Different shapes bounded by the same perimeter can enclose very different areas. Math Topic: Perimeter/Area.

Eureeka!
(topic: 2- & 3-D Geometry) - Pursued by Hacker, Digit lands on cybersite Eureeka, where his mission is to find Professor Archimedes - the maker of the encryptor chip, a unique computer chip that can fix Motherboard. But Archimedes is nowhere to be found - only a pile of two-dimensional rods where his chip factory should be. The kids arrive to help, and discover that by linking the two-dimensional rods together into certain geometrical patterns they actually create a surprising three-dimensional shape that leads directly to unraveling the mystery of Archimedes' strange disappearance. The Big Idea: When you follow simple rules to make flat geometrical shapes (two- dimensional), and join them together, you can discover new shapes that, instead of staying flat, rise up to make three-dimensional objects.

(topic: Algebraic Variables) - The Hacker challenges Jackie, Matt and Inez to a contest on cyber-wide television! In order to prove to all of Cyberspace that Hacker's not as powerful or smart as he seems - the kids return to Topsy-Turvy Island on the Northern Frontier for the contest. Their mission is to power up a Mini-Wreaker using cyber-fireflies of varying power before the island turns inside out at sunset. The kids must use algebraic equations to determine how many Gleamers - and how much power - they'll need. The Big Idea: When you use a letter to stand in for a number that repeats or changes in a problem, you can simplify the arithmetic and make the problem easier to solve.
