Intense Drama: The Criminal Mind
(June 23 at 9 p.m.)
Bank Robber #5
The bumbling fifth man in a group of bank robbers proves his worth despite appearances to the contrary. Canadian director Evan Kelly's first film is a chance for him to cut his filmmaking teeth after working as a production assistant on a couple of others' films.
Razor's Edge
This taut tale focuses on a barber and his less-than-comfortable head-shaving client. In an attempt to take the young man's mind off his nervousness, the barber tells him the secret of how the "alien myth" got started in this country. The film was shot entirely on location in New York City in association with Swiss Television by veteran Swiss director Lorenzo Benedick. It debuted at the South by Southwest Film Festival.
Reflexus
Writer/director/editor Mark Yoshikawa gives a double nod to both Twilight Zone and Hitchcock's Rear Window in this tense story of a man's voyeuristic habits and the results of those habits -- the man's reality folds in upon itself as he witnesses an attack and realizes who the attacker really is. Yoshikawa is an alumni of UC Santa Barbara and is proud of his film's accomplishments including: Grand Prize Finalist of the USA Film Festival and Best of Competition at the Film Works International Film Festival.
Deep Cut
An attempted mugging takes an unexpected twist when the would-be victim is faced with the dilemma of whether or not to aid his injured attacker as he slowly bleeds to death. The film was written and directed by Canadian filmmaker William Phillips and was an offering at the Palm Springs International Film Festival.
